Protecting your unborn child

Some infections, like HIV or syphilis can be passed to the baby in the womb or at birth. If doctors are aware a mother has the infection they can take steps to help protect the unborn child.

I have an STI, how can I protect my newborn?

Some STIs can be passed to the child after birth. If the infection is known about, you can take steps to prevent this from happening. So, if you think you may have an STI, it’s important to let your GP, nurse or midwife know.
